Rant 963 / Stacking Bags

Looks like it's going to be impossible to stick my Huawei E170 3G USB modem into my iPad.

When I asked Starhub, my ISP, about whether I could upgrade this to their new Mifi E5830 modem I was told that it's not possible. The alternative is to acquire a second SIM card that's under the same 3G plan under the Multi-Sim service. This option will cost me S$10.70 per month and an additional S$10.70 as the activation fee.

Nope.

Moreover, my iPad doesn't have 3G capabilities.

Of course there is a way out of this.

I'm shopping at DX again, this time for 3G routers. These little battery-powered routers use the broadband from the USB stick and become an access point for my iPad.

Theoretically.

Lots of little details to watch, from what I've read.

For one, most of the routers, including the "portable" ones, require AC instead of having a battery.

Misleading.

Another detail is that it must support HSDPA/WCDMA. Not all do I think.

Finally, to reduce the messiness of this whole setup, I require an actual female USB socket in the router itself. No mini-USB socket with a USB cable nonsense.

At the moment, the HAME MPR-A1 looks like the best option.

However, it's still new so there are no reviews at the moment.

At US$24.70, this is a pretty good deal considering that it meets all my conditions. The catch, however, is that the battery only lasts up to 4 hours.

To improve my chances, I'm buying another, albeit less attractive, router SKU73349. It's basically the same except heavier.

The former costs US$24.70 and weighs 58g while the latter costs US$36.70 and weighs 91g.

Either can be cheaper than the option of getting a new mobile broadband plan in the long run, as long as they last several months.

Another alternative is to get a real 3G plan for my phone and use it as an access point. The problem is that it makes the phone heat up quickly and drains the battery.

Alright, so there are some decent free games on the iPad after all, one of them being Temple Run and another called Zombie Highway.

Both are focused on whatever the mechanism is that detects the tilt angle of the tablet.

I'd like to get the FF games but they're expensive :|

As for Productivity apps, the only app that suits my needs seems to be Google Docs Editor but it's kinda crappy in that the table is flattened to the left side of the screen when the table is blank, like if you set the width of each column to zero.

It works but it's ugly.

The thing is, if I don't discover a better one soon, I'm going to buy it.

That's not true. I'm just like that Yorick and for a period of time, I even played as Yorick exclusively. In addition, I made smurf accounts and pretended to be a newbie just so that I can end what the comic termed as "the perpetual circlejerk of blame".

Yeah yeah it's all my fault, now STFU and move on.

LoL has yet to display this error throughout my entire experience with the game.

It gets kinda tiring to watch others deflect blame though. They're probably the kind of people who would cause a traffic accident with witnesses who are willing to testify against them, and then when they go to court they hire a lawyer and plead "not guilty".

I'm not even joking! Such people actually exist in abundance around the world, but are more frequently found in LoL.

Rant 962 / The "I Have No Idea What You're Talking About But I'm Going To Pretend That I Do" Laugh

Just tried a 3v3v3v3 in Civ V. Not what I expected at all.

I kept getting into what I'd call "flash wars" because they would start all of a sudden and end like 5 turns later.

This is caused by the mechanics of the game's AI which is designed for free-for-all (FFA) games that I've been playing.

More specifically, it's about the tolerance thresholds of each civilization.

First, when I make friends with each trio, some of them are bound to dislike each other.

It may be just one of a certain trio, but when I make a Declaration of Friendship, all of us would be doing that with all three of them.

This means the hostile feelings this action creates in the AIs that dislike someone in this trio would be triple of what it would get in a normal FFA game.

Warm friendly relationships sour three times as fast in a game like this.

Second, with 6 players fighting against each other, many units tend to die simultaneously each turn.

Therefore the balance can easily tilt either way three times as quickly as normal.

Here's the problem: each side can agree to a ceasefire when one of its civilization agrees to the terms of the treaty.

That's what I learnt when I refused to end my first war and somehow it still ended the next turn when I was preparing to invade my invader.

In summary, the game's flow fluctuates thrice as quickly in that game and surprised me.

There are actually people who mistake the screen protectors' protective plastic covers as the screen protectors themselves, as if they got two for the price of one.

"Ever-evolving Experience - Enhance your game with an expanding array of downloadable content from maps and units to factions, campaigns, and more, the fight against terrorism is deeper than ever."

Downloadable units.

Oh well, the EA-era C&C games were never famous for their balance anyway, other than the lack of it.

This pic says it best.

Civ V is more enjoyable if I play other games or do something else simultaneously.

For the last few games, I've been watching streams and playing Towns (v0.42) with it.

The key reason is there is way too much downtime in between each turn in a game with 11 other civilizations.

Another less important reason is that there really isn't much to do other than hit the "Next Turn" button until the Medieval era.

After 3 days of exploring the app store, I can now safely say that the iPad is no fun if you don't spend money on it nor jailbreak it.

But more importantly, there is no free app that allows images to be posted on spreadsheets.

Looks like I'm really going to have to buy one of those apps.

Rant 961 / CIV CV

Let's just say that I don't actually play Civ 5 all that much.

Until recently, that is.

And the game I was talking about took two days to complete at turn 1003.

I'd call this a close shave.

If you look at the background, you would see that:

1) Genghis Khan (maroon) had over half the map as opposed to the little white patch that was my Greek empire ruled by Alexander.

2) Genghis Khan had just completed the Manhattan Project which allows players to build nukes.

Also consider the facts that he had been denouncing me since forever and began to take a hostile stance towards me about 15 turns before this.

Actually I was worrying about the possibility of a Mongol invasion so much I sacrificed two Great Generals I kept around to boost my army's performance for Golden Ages that, among other things, boost productivity.

I was also fortunate enough to get a Great Engineer about 20 turns before I researched Globalization, which allows the UN Building to be built, so that I could use him to speed up the construction of that structure in my capital.

Moreover, I stopped upgrading my army while I was getting that World Wonder up so that I would have enough cash to buy the city-states again in case Genghis Khan spent his cash to buy influence in them. By doing so, I was risking an invasion from him by having an increasingly obsolete military.

I'd probably have lost if it wasn't an AI because a real player would have spent all that gold to buy the favours of the city-states.

TBH that was kinda cheap. The cultural victory may be legit but taking advantage of a weakness of the AI isn't.

I'm just too much of a pacifist for this game, I guess. I should probably play team games like a 3v3v3v3 so that I can just donate troops to my allies whenever it's possible to stay out of wars.

Spent the evening playing that and browsing the iPad's app store for free apps.

Useful MSWord-like apps are plentiful but I have yet to find one that allows images and tables to be combined into one, unlike Excel.

Games-wise, expectedly disappointing. Almost everything that's free either suck or encourages mini-transactions. I don't blame the developers, but it's just not very nice.

Rant 960 / Pawn Cites

So I tried to go for a small, condensed empire in Civ V instead following my usual expansionistic tendencies.

Nope, not my style. I was using England which produces double quantities of several strategic resources. Fewer cities means I produce fewer military units when I need them.

Probably needs a different strategy during wars. What I'm doing now is I garrison a unit in almost every city I have so that when I get attacked, I pull all my garrison troops to the hot zone and pwn the living crap out of the invading army. In addition, every city which finishes whatever it's producing begins to train new units as long as I feel that my army isn't able to overwhelm the opposing force.

A small empire would probably need a larger standing force constantly and not just garrisons.

Also, I'm starting to like Alexander a lot more than Harun. Those city-states are really useful, especially the militaristic ones. Although they give me a military unit every 17-20 turns, it saves me all the turns I could spend on building Wonders and other more important structures.

Moreover, with Patronage policies I'm able to reduce the influence decay to 0.24 per turn and raise the influence gain through gold gifts by 25%. The last time I handed out a thousand bucks, it gave me 115 influence points. Taking away the 29 points that's in the Neutral level, that's still over 350 turns worth of goodwill from that city-state!

With all my games' speed set to Marathon (1500 turns), every thousand gold I give away gets me a city-state's bonuses for a fifth of the game!

<3

Or if we want to be more specific, I'm really into the Ally bonuses, not the Friend bonuses.

In this case, I need to raise the 29 points to 59. At 60 points, I'll be an Ally.

So (115-59) / 0.24 = 233 turns! After the initial gift (unless I did something for it instead like killing a nearby barbarian encampment), I'll be getting even more per gift since I don't have to cover the first 59 points anymore.

And this game I'm having is so awesome.

Between England and I are a chain of city-states, half of which I'm allied with.

When England declared war on me, Elizabeth's units had to pass through my allies to get to me.

They never reached me.

On their way to my territory, her units were constantly attacked and distracted by one of my allied city-state. Eventually she agreed to a peace treaty... with 30 gold for me.

I upgraded my own units for nothing but I guess they now make a better deterrence.

Still, I'd prefer to spend that 400+ gold on more gifts to other city-states.

This is getting bad. It's the 826th turn and I'm first in Science, Culture, Wonders according to the various rankings that pop up once in a while. Meanwhile in the Victory Progress menu, it's still too early to tell but I have the most number of technologies and social policies.

But Genghis Khan has like a third of the map and is 1500 points ahead of me.

Once the UN is up, I'm totally winning the game though. The reason is because I'm allied with every single city-state in the map, therefore I'll automatically have all 23 of their votes in the UN.

Oooh a package for me? On a Sunday? No wonder, it's DHL. But... DealExtreme only uses shitty standard mail.

 *GASP*

It's from Foxconn!

Ya, that's a MacDonald's Big Breakfast styrofoam cover that's currently serving as a coaster.

 My first Apple product.

 Time to open it.

So that's what $700 look like.

This is its thickness, and the accesories provided. There's a 30-pin/USB cable underneath the rectangular packet.

It even came with a fully charged battery!

Since my accesories are still 2 weeks away, I'm going to use it with the wrapper on. Not that I'll be using it much. This week is just for unpacking my new goods. Tiring week ahead!

I'll just be leaving it switched off at home.

Rant 959 / Too Many Chicken Wings And Not Enough Space

WED

Worry. Have to get back to the worries.

Worries are like foreplay, except the point is to avoid the climax.

The bank account that my mum and I had designated for work-related payments is almost empty.

Didn't expect that.

I haven't been looking at it since before she passed away because I had the impression there was more than enough to handle several months of rent.

But today when I was trying to pay the suppliers and deposit whatever I have left of last month's revenue after taking away what I need for personal use, I was informed that I didn't have enough for all of the transactions.

When the cheque gets through tomorrow, I'll have a little more than enough to complete the remainder, cover the minimum sum and take care of this month's rent.

But this means that I'll be broke till my buyers pay me next month. "Broke" as in I can't pay for any orders without using my personal savings. I still have enough for my daily necessities.

This is indeed a worry. Even if this doesn't get worse, it still means I've been overestimating the future of my finances.

I may not be able to do some of what I've been thinking about doing in the near future.

Gah!

On a more positive note, the Singapore Dollar has been pretty high versus the Renminbi recently despite a tiny drop since yesterday. Hopefully it doesn't drop too much tomorrow when the teller helps me to finish the matter on her own since the bank will be using the new exchange rate.

Truth to be told I think I had ordered too many sweaters. Right now I have enough to cover the next several months or so, hence I'm really more concerned about jackets and pants. Scarves and gloves are cheap so they're not major problems, but jackets and pants obviously cost more.

I guess I've been doing it wrong.

It's not exactly a bad thing if I can afford it since it's a good time to pay the Chinese right now, but the problem is that I don't think I can. Technically I can pay them now, but I'll have to drag the payments for future orders unless I spend my own money.

I don't think I've been losing money from buying bad stuff... yet. I don't know for sure because I've only begun to sell half the shipment I received since the last weekend.

The problem is mainly because we made too little from the last several months due to everything that's been happening. Insufficient input to satisfy the output.

So far the sweater supplier has been nice enough to throw in stuff that my mum had ordered before and sold decently in addition to what I ordered, so I'm not worried about that part. It's a win-win there.

Pants and jackets. Problems.

I've been putting these off for so long I won't have much to sell in the next few months. It's not like I can just give that supplier a call and say," Hey gimme some jackets!" and Poof! they appear at my doorstep the next day.

I wish I can though.

The situation isn't so bad but like I said, it's a worry. It's a problem in the future.

If I make this month what I made in the last, I can probably handle another order, but it's going to be cutting it close then. Frankly I'm not used to the idea of not having buffers.

At least it's not as bad as what happened when my father passed away. My parents didn't have any joint accounts at all so she had to ask the suppliers to allow her to pay several months after receiving the goods.

I guess being a newly widowed mother helps in that situation too. I don't think I can garner that kind of sympathy from the Chinese businessmen myself.

At worst, I'll have to pull out a fixed deposit. Premature withdrawal gives me no interest but this is the kind of problem those deposits are there for.

What luck! Some dude came over to my office for some cheap jackets, apparently after the office next door recommended us to him.

Except he only wanted the really cheap crap and was willing to take the stuff that we can't sell without going against our conscience.

For example, there's this really old jacket in which the elastic string around the hip level has become very brittle due to age. It's one of the designs that my mum never got rid of for some reason. I was actually planning to let the workers throw the whole stack away when they have the time but since he came over, the older one suggested that we give it to him for S$5 apiece.

Another old design that wasn't selling at all and had only about 20 pieces remaining from a random number of sizes was offered to him at 30% off. Everything else that had some kind of issue and cannot be sold to my current buyers, I offered at half price.

Basically, I got about $700 for nothing. Gave the workers $150, $100 for the older one and $50 for the younger one. The former was so happy she called me "boss" in Chinese instead of "Mr..." for the rest of the day.

And yes, there is a difference because of what these two imply and because she did it voluntarily.

I did it mainly because she was the one who did all the physical work and suggested that we sell the junk. I was never in the office the entire time and hence never got directly involved with the whole transaction until it was over. I didn't even get to see the guy.

Is a mere hundred that big?

I'll admit it used to be a huge sum for me back when I was a student, but I've long since learnt that $100 doesn't do shit for me anymore. It just doesn't cover anything significant like rent or wages.

But if a hundred bucks makes them that excited, then it was well worth the money.

Not that I'll give them more next time unless I see a good reason for that. In fact I was considering not giving anything this because they might begin to expect something every time someone comes over to buy from me directly.

In the end I thought this probably won't be happening a lot in the future anyway, and they deserved the money. As for the rest, I need something to cover my capital and help pay the rent.

THU

Now considering getting some cashmere scarves and hats, and some polyester long johns. The problem is still capital.

If I do this, I'll need to pull some cash from my personal savings account. I don't like this idea but it seems to be necessary.

I'm excited by the possible prices they are stating online, which I do not expect do be accurate, but the problem appears when I combine the minimum order quantity with them.

I just don't want to spend everything I have on a single design, so hopefully they are alright with an order that consists of a bit of everything.

Hopefully :P

I like this feeling I get when I find stuff that I think will sell but I don't like to be limited by my small capital.

I will still keep my uncle's suggestion of bank loans in mind but I do not foresee myself getting any within the year.

Oh wow I cannot get the Public Trustee to handle my mum's estate because she's the sole owner of a HDB flat. I think "interest in a firm or other business", which also prevents the office from doing this, also applies since I left her in the Manager position in the ACRA system.

Now I really need a lawyer, I think.

Probably should ask them since I had just applied to HDB for a transfer of ownership before opening this letter from CPF.

The letter also stated that they're going to let the Public Trustee handle her CPF and the Singtel shares the government gave her.

I think that means the Public Trustee can still handle most of the things for us except for the flat and the firm.

The timing of Prudential is excellent. I've just received the money from the "death covers". After splitting it between my bro and I, I should have enough to rest easy for another month. Oh yes, I don't have to worry too much about ordering too little of those cashmere stuff anymore.

For now anyway.

FRI

Just asked my freight forwarder and apparently they can't help me with orders made in Inner Mongolia.

Maaaaaaaaaaaan..........

And according to them, it's much more expensive if PSA is involved, which would be the likely scenario if I ask the manufacturer to arrange the shipping for me.

I have an idea but I'm not sure if that's even possible.

It's still going to jack up the price though.

Perhaps I'll just make a tiny order and see. The manufacturers are alright with what I described yesterday as "a bit of everything", so this is indeed tempting.

I've finally encountered my first major mistake!

It seems that I might have ordered way more than I can handle!

I've just received several boxes of sweaters yesterday and today, I was informed that many more bags are arriving in Singapore on Sunday evening. At this rate, they will be delivering them to me on Monday.

Oh boy.

My office can barely handle half that many bags. I remember seeing that much one time back when I went over to help my mum to unpack.

Fortunately, I was able to work something out but I'll have to spend a bit more now.

One major issue here solved, another one to go.

This next one is the storage. Even though I'm confident that we can unpack everything, I'm actually unsure about how I can store the few thousand jackets. Hopefully the workers can find enough space, or we won't have any to work in. That would really suck.

No wonder I ran out of money so quickly. I probably ordered way too much.

Bad time to have too much though.

The next time business picks up again is still weeks away.

What do?

Got to go for a reservist briefing tomorrow. They booked an entire day and like last year, I'm pretty sure they're just going to make us waste most of it while they sort out their messed up logistical issues.

I can't find my rank insignia. I guess I'll be going as a frickin private.

Rant 958 / Missing More Than I Thought

So in the end I bought a cover and a pouch aka protective bag for the ipad instead of 2 covers and some stands.

The cover can serve as a stand anyway, so I might as well save that 10 bucks for something else.

As for the silicone case, I thought since I've never looked back after switching from that to this leather casing for my phone, I should apply it to the tablet too. The main reason is that I want something that can protect the already protected screen from scratches.

Therefore I went for the pouch as a backup instead which was cheaper anyway.

But if I have to use the pouch, there's going to be a slight issue with the lack of a stand/holder. No matter. A backup is a makeshift temporary solution, not a full-fledged permanent change.

Also bought 3 screen protectors just because. They're only US$1.60 anyway due to bulkrate, and one of the reviews mentioned that buying an ipad case might have helped prevent his screen protector from bending due to shitty packaging like the other reviewers.

Since there is no guarantee that I will buy a case and a screen protector at the same time in the future, I thought I'd just hoard 2 spares.

As for the extra US$1.70 that applies for any order using bulkrate prices, a friend also asked for 3 USB extension cables so the total discount managed to offset this extra fee. Nett discount was US$1.12, hence I could say I paid US$0.48 for a third screen protector.

Seriously considering using Skype for my normal calls.

Very seriously. More seriously than the other time when I considered the same possibility.

A monthly subscription for 60 minutes for Singapore-only phone numbers only costs about S$2 although it excludes SMSes. Skype only offers SMS through Skype Credits.

If I use my mobile modem with my iPad and my bluetooth headset...

HMMMMMMMMMM......................

I'm currently paying over S$30 a month for my current mobile plan and about S$100 a month for my mum's mobile plan.

If I switch to using VOIP exclusively, I will still require my mobile numbers and there is no way I can keep them without a postpaid plan at any telco here.

Hmm..

Perhaps I'll get the SunShare plan and pick the cheapest S$19.26 option with a supplementary line of the same plan at S$12.84. And another S$5.35 per line for the Caller ID display service (damn..).

Other than the mere purpose of keeping these numbers, they will serve as backups when 3G isn't available.

This way, I'll only need one smartphone and a generic 2G phone in the future.

If I do this, I'm going to need a backup battery for the iPad, the sort that stores electricity.

But first, I'll need to test the current assumption that I can get decent voice quality via Skype and Starhub's mobile broadband.

Next I'll have to wait till my current contracts have ended before I make the switch. That's going to be like 18 months from now.

If this works, I'll be able to cut down the expenditure in this area by two thirds, and that's not even taking into account the cheaper replacements I'll be getting when my two phones stop working.

Been looking at the batteries on DealExtreme even though I've already made the order. What I've learnt while googling is that although there are plenty of batteries there that claim to be iPad-compatible, they are very slow.

You see, the important detail is the electrical current that has the unit Ampere (A). Since the voltage is always 5V for all the batteries, the current determines the charging speed.

The adapter for all 3 generations of the iPad and can handle up to 2.1A or 2100mA of electrical current.

That's the speed limit.

With the 10W charger provided, I can get a safe current of 2A or 2000mA.

But for non-Apple accessories, they may not necessarily provide 2100mA of current.

For most of the cheapest batteries on DealExtreme (around 10USD apiece), their outputs are less than 800mA. That means they're more for iPhones since they can take 1000mA at most.

But if you stick that into your iPad, the speed compared to using the legit Apple wall charger would be max current output of battery divided by 2000mA, eg 800mA/2000mA. You can see how fast that would be if you have any experience with an iPad.

To me, the capacity doesn't matter as much because if you have to resort to using this backup battery, chances are you won't need a lot of power by then.

So far the cheapest semi-decent battery I've found is this 2800mAh one. With an output of 1500mA, it can charge the iPad for less than 2 hours, about 1 hour and 50mins.

At a charging speed of 1500/2100 of what I'd get from the legit charger, that means using it to its maximum limit is equivalent to charging the tablet normally for (5/7) * (28/15) = 4/3 hours, or 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Since an iPad 2 takes about 4.5 hours to fully charge from empty using the legit wall charger, if I'm using an iPad 2 it would fill (4/3) / (9/2) * 100% = 30% when it's switched off.

iPhones, iPods and iPads all share the same 30-pin connector port for their chargers' adapters except for the iPod Shuffle. It's a proprietary design by Apple and honestly very convenient for Apple fans. The only difference between them, as I had mentioned, is the maximum currents.

Coincidentally there's a similar battery at DinoDirect with a capacity of 2800mAh and a max output current of 2.1A that's priced at US$12.99 (S$16.89) vs US$12.10 for the one from DealExtreme.

Both have no reviews though. That's pretty significant issue.

Whatever. I'll have to look again after I've confirmed that the 3G signal in Singapore can handle Skype. I heard it can't but online results are telling me different.

So holding a gun makes it more likely for the wielder to see other objects as guns.

Brockmole's team ran five experiments with 220 participants. In each, the volunteers held either a foam ball or a firearm (a Wii gun - a type of gun used in videogames - or a disabled carbon-dioxide-powered BB pistol) while images flashed by on a monitor.

Each image, lasting less than a second, showed a person holding a gun or an innocuous object such as a shoe, soda can, or cell phone. The person in the image was either black or white, bare-headed or wearing a black ski mask. In one variation, the participant did not hold a gun, but one was conspicuously placed in the lab.

The mere presence of a gun nearby did not influence how likely people were to mistake a shoe or other innocent object for a gun. But holding a gun was, the scientists report in the upcoming paper.

That's somewhat disturbing. What happens to a woman's perception when she's shopping for dildos?

Perhaps the most notorious real-world example of that was the 1999 killing Amidou Diallo in New York City: the 23-year-old Guinean immigrant was shot 41 times by police officers who perceived him as brandishing a gun. Standing in a dark doorway, Diallo was in fact showing them his wallet.

I wonder how they dealt with it. Not only did they kill him but with 41 shots, they were probably mutilating his corpse as well. I wonder what others would say to him.

"Shit happens. It's ok."

or

"God will forgive you."

or

"You couldn't have known. It's not your fault."

Meanwhile there was a corpse filled with 41 bullets, or bits of them, lying in the morgue, of a man who truly didn't do anything to deserve it.

How incredibly wrong it would feel if someone actually says those things.

The iPad overheats?

I HOPE NOT!

The tablet has an operating temperature range of 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees to 35 degrees Celsius), which is the same as iPad 2.

Engineers at Consumer Reports recorded temperatures as high as 116 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius) on the front and back of the new iPad when plugged in and while playing Infinity Blade II. When unplugged, the tablet's back reached temperatures as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

Not really a huge concern. I doubt I'm going to buy games anyway. Still, if anything else makes it overheat like that, perhaps the extended warranty was a good idea after all.

It's just basic knowledge that overheating ruins electronics.

Oh wow I just remembered I didn't find Zaeed and Kasumi in ME3. WHAT KIND OF SAVE DID I LOAD INTO MY ME3 RUN??

Tuesday 20 March 2012

Rant 957 / This Was Supposed To Be The Big One To Let EA's Origin Gain A Better Foothold In The Video Game Digital Distribution Market

I just realized the only Mass Effect 2 save I have rescued from my previous computer wasn't the one I thought I had.

I was thinking that Thane was dead in my ME3 run because he died from whatever illness he had been suffering from.

Nope, he was dead because I made the wrong choice in the final mission in ME2.

Realized that when I saw Thane in ME3 when it was being streamed on V2.

So now I have three things to change the next time I play the ME games:

1) Save Kaiden
2) Let the Councilors die
3) Make all the right choices for the final ME2 mission.

A ME3 fan is making a complaint at FTC (AFAIK it's like Singapore's CASE and CCS combined) against EA about the ending.

"After reading through the list of promises about the ending of the game they made in their advertising campaign and PR interviews, it was clear that the product we got did not live up to any of those claims," El_Spiko says. "This is not somethign [sic] I was happy to do, but after the terrible ending that was in no way the product that had been advertised to me and the lack of any kind of response from Bioware/EA to address this, I felt it was one of my only recourses."

Oh boy!

Here's some popcorn for everyone.

Wasteland 2 has attracted US$1.36M at the moment. Over fourteen thousand others like me spent $15 for a promise of a downloadable copy of the game when it's released. TBH $15 for a game like that is a decent price even 20 years ago.

I guess the hype has died down and the level of investment from the public has reached a plateau. With 29 days left to go, it's probably going to hit US$3M when it's over.

IMO there are two main possible ends to this.

One, revival of the age of "retro games", and the system used by Kickstarter becomes the new way of obtaining funding in the video game industry.

Two, people realize that it's not that games are bad today, but that they're no longer the people they used to be. In other words, it's not as much a matter of taste as it is of nostalgia.

Who knows how this will end? Maybe I'm completely wrong and it turns out that it's none of the above.

ME3 SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT WATCH UNLESS YOU'RE READY!

RIP bro ;_;7

So an aunt(?) called after she was informed by my relatives in Penang. I was planning to get her brother to inform her but somehow both those relatives and his ex-wife gave me his old number that he's no longer using.

Anyway she gave me an idea about my business. She herself is running several restaurants and is even about to open a bakery in Alabama, so despite the differences between our industries, she did tell me some tips on things we have in common, one of which I'm going to seriously consider in the long term.

Wait a min... if she's the daughter of my great-grandaunt, that makes her my cousin, right?

Huh.

Also told me to go to church. When she said that she wasn't a spiritual person despite filling a third of the entire phone conversation with religious advice, it kinda gave me an idea of how religious her environment must be.

I'm not looking for answers nor for support, hence religion isn't neccesary at this point.

She did make a good point about networking through church though. But if I'm not going to do it, I'm going to have to find another way to achieve this purpose.

Rant 956 / Senor_Hybrido: Your Cheap As Fck Blogger

Tried cold brew coffee for the first time. It's... not acidic!

Not too good because I prepared it at 8pm last night and I'm drinking it at 11.30am now.

Supposedly it's best to leave it for 24 hours, ie prepare it at 11am yesterday. Now it's kinda bland, but it shows that it works!

Hence I've prepared a second batch for tomorrow.

This is the recipe I've adapted to suit what is available to me. Basically I add the usual amount of water into the usual amount of coffee, stir it, leave it covered at room temperature, then strain it with my paper filters.

This is just like the tea I used to drink. Back then when I was still using large 1L bottles instead of this big mug, I'd leave a tea bag in the bottle and either drink it immediately or leave it in the fridge for the next day.

So I've been looking at the prices of iPad accessories on DealExtreme and the price of the HDMI cable surprised me - it's more than half the price of the same product offered by the online Apple Store.

US$27.30 is about S$34 nett, while Apple sells it for about S$57.80 nett.

Everything else is cheaper though.

That's my current unconfirmed cart.

2 screen protectors, 2 holders, 2 cases and one of that cable for a total of US$68.01 or about S$85.70.

If I'm not getting spares and just get the more expensive one of each type of item plus the cable, that will cost me a total of about S$58.

I guess I was almost right when I said that I could get all the accesories I want at the price of that HDMI cable from the Apple Store.

Initially I was planning to get 3 screen protectors and get $0.50 off each, but to get bulkrate I must add $1.70 for shipping. If I buy 4, that would be worth it. The only problem is that I have no reason to buy that many spares.

Also thinking about getting a USB hub. It's only like S$4 for the cheapest 2.0 4-port ones with decent reviews.

When I first saw the article entitled "5 reasons NOT to buy the new iPad" I just had to read on to see what the reasons were.

Pfft...

1. You’re already got an iPad 2

2. LTE only works in North America

3. The screen alone is not worth the upgrade

4. Still largely the same unexciting hardware

5. It’s not the only tablet

Right.

Firstly, I don't have an iPad. Or even a decent smartphone because Nokia N8 is a Symbian device.

Secondly, LTE is a 4G thing, and the one I bought was a wifi-only because I am going to use my mobile modem with it.

Thirdly, it's not an upgrade if you have nothing in the first place.

Fourthly, I know, but see the third reason.

Fifthly, it's the only tablet with a display like that. No other tablet has a resolution like it until Samsung releases it next tablet... probably.

That feel when every single attempt to discourage you from what you're doing turn out to be utter failure.

I think there's this misconception that to be successful, you just need great ideas.

IMO there are two things that one needs, one of which being that.

The other is the ability to get things done.

This second ability is what makes people rise to the top. Even if they have absolutely no good idea, they can still be the right-hand-men of better people.

The first is what makes these "better men" better, but it's simply useless on its own.

Plenty of people have ideas. Like, seriously, everyone has at least one.

Turning them into reality is important part.

Of course, that's only true in an ideal world.

In our world, there's yet another factor - the ability to convince others that your idea is the best.

Because let's face it, this world is too grey. There's no such thing as the perfect idea, only ones that differ in their costs, effects and risks. There are a million ways to make a million, and more methods to earn each thousand that we can ever finish analyzing carefully.

With such an incredible array of possibilities and an even wider variety of moralities and personal principles, we cannot expect people in general to be able to agree on a single "best" idea on their own.

Hence the importance of persuasion.

IMO, the priorities of this three would be as follow, from the most important to the least:

- the ability to get things done
- persuasion
- ideas

If you have the first and the third, it's not enough, eg Creative and Steve Wozniak.

If you have the first two, you can still be a pretty successful person but it's nigh impossible to ever be the top dog.

Finally, if you have the last two, ie you have great ideas and can convince others that they're fantastic but you're never able to show results, then you're just full of hot air. Sure you can convince others to get things done, but you will encounter problems you have to deal with yourself no matter what.

Rant 955 / Level 191: Angkor Wat

http://baldursgate.com/

I wonder what's going to happen at the end of the countdown.

BG3?

OhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboyOhboy

No, I have no idea what's about to happen.

Inb4 it's Bioware doing it and you can romance Boo in BG3.

This is a very serious Japanese documentary on sushi.

And another on origami.

All my respect to anyone who has reached difficulty level 191.

Played a bit of Civilization V. Now I see the purpose of befriending City-States and the bonus for completing entire policy categories.

For some reason I missed both points in the past.

Because of these, my game as Harun al-Rashid was so damn easy.

Ok, maybe it's also partly because I was lucky enough to start next to some Ivory tiles.

That made my people really happy, and that in turn increased my growth.

It didn't go that well in the beginning and even got invaded twice. Fortunately I had enough caution to garrison Archers in every city, so I managed to repel them all with minimal losses, causing them to negotiate peace with seriously one-sided deals to appease me.

Then when I discovered that I could buy alliances with City-States with just a thousand gold, I kept spending all my savings on the Militaristic Edinburgh next to me and every Cultured one on the map. Edinburgh gave me a free military unit every 18 turns while each Cultured City-State gave me 12 Culture points per turn.

In addition, all that money and growth and expansion allowed me to have enough to keep negotiating deals with other civilizations so that every single one of my cities were constantly celebrating "We Love The King Day!"

The game's still not finished but it's obvious who's winning.

If we consider a Domination victory, I have the largest territory after destroying two other civilizations.

If we consider a Cultural victory, I have 22 policies already while others have about 17 at most.

If we consider a Science victory, the fact that I was the first to hit the Renaissance and Industrial and Modern eras says something about my Science production rate.

As for Score victory, I'm over 600 points ahead of the first runner-up.

The only uncertainty lies in the Diplomatic victory because after all those wars, I'm now the most hated civilization in the game.

I'm not even the bloodthirsty warmonger they make me out to be! My ally, Siam (also the first runner-up), was the one who declared war on the entire world like a boss. I merely agreed to aiding him.

The AIs are stupid, seriously. Their strategy is to declare war on as many civilizations as their armies could handle, apparently under the assumption that all of them will use the same AI tactics.

Well, I'm not an AI and I don't use their tactics. I focus my entire army on one city at a time, annexing every city that lies between my starting point at the enemy's capital. That's why Germany, the first civilization strong enough to declare war on the entire world (and finally on me) lost everything but two cities on what used to be the opposite ends of its territory.

I cut through its lands from west to east then north, while Siam took the south.

I also reject peace offerings when I'm in for the kill.

However, it is strange that the AI would reject my demands for all their luxury resources in exchange for a ceasefire when I'm about to take its capital. Why doesn't try everything it could to hold on to the heart of its civilization?

Oh, and I'm only playing on Easy. Yea a whole rant on how I beat retarded children.

This is noteworthy only because it's been the easiest CV game I've had in a very long time.

Probably because I suck at the game.

Another hint at this possibility is that I still don't get how most of the bonuses of the other civilizations are useful. For example, Napoleon's bonus is +2 Culture points until the invention of Steam Power.

So the French don't get a racial benefit after they have cars?

In fact, a lot of them focus on early-game advantages, especially the ones that have to do with Barbarians, eg Bismark's, since they don't appear anymore by the Renaissance era unless you're playing the one-city mode.

And Gandhi's bonus that halves Unhappiness can't be as awesome as the gold bonus I get as Harun al-Rashid. Clearly both are meant for large empires with many cities, but Happiness really isn't too hard to obtain when you have the money.

After sitting on it for three days, I finally pre-ordered "The New iPad" with the extended warranty thing.

S$614.95 for the 16GB wifi-only black iPad 3, S$110.28 for the Applecare Protection Plan, totalling S$776 inclusive of tax.

It's no small sum but after three days, I can confirm this isn't an impulse buy.

Removed the HDMI cable from the order because I'm not about to spend that much money on something that is for personal use.

That thing alone costs S$54! The horror!

I could easily get all the accessories I want from DealExtreme with that amount of money.

Of course I'll be using it for personal stuff; the battery in my Acer laptop's motherboard is dying. I could get it replaced but I'm just going to use this tablet to replace it.

16GB should be ok. Assuming the OS takes 4GB, there is still 12GB of space. All I have are photos and some simple tables that serve as inventory lists anyway. Between the iCloud and USB port, I should be able to keep all the less important files outside to maintain a healthily half-full hard drive.

As for the internet access, I plan to keep my free mobile broadband modem that comes with my home broadband plan for the foreseeable future, so I have no need for a 4G tablet. Saves me about S$170 too. With the iPad 3 priced at S$658 with tax, S$170 is about 26%!

Engraved my full name and phone number on the back. I should have engraved my business's name too but I didn't want to discount the possibility of renaming my business in the future.

I know, it's not going to look good but the focus here is to make it as utilitarian as possible.

When it comes to work, utilitarianism always comes first.

As for that warranty plan, if Apple comes up with an even longer one I'd take that. In fact I'd prefer a 4-year warranty plan, even if it costs 3 times of what I'm currently paying.

If only.

Also did a recontract with Starhub for the MaxInfinity Ultimate Plus that comes with the mobile broadband. Originally wanted the Home Hubbing Pack that includes a basic cable TV plan together with the above and at a similar price but apparently, when they say it requires a new MaxInfinity subscription it also means that existing MaxOnline customers do not qualify either.

A little misleading TBH.

Now my Internet's going to be a little cheaper while maintaining the same (advertised) bandwidth. It's just a switch from cable to fibre.

I wonder what's wrong with the ending of Mass Effect 3. The plot was kinda lame with no mind-blowing twist at the end, but the game itself was pretty good. I guess people expected more from a game of this quality.

Just pledged US$15 for Wasteland 2. I liked the first two Fallout games but didn't complete either. Wasteland can be said to be the predecessor of Fallout.

It's going to be using the top-down view again which means the graphics are easier to make. Hopefully this leaves them with more time to focus on making better and more content.

It's received so much support, at least 8 people pledged 10k and 5 people pledged 5k, allowing it to hit its goal of 900k within 3 days.

33 days more to go. It could easily exceed Double Fine's 3mil if this continues at the current rate. Of course it won't, because at this rate of 1mil per 3 days, 33 days will give them 11mil.

Even though they're getting less than what the large companies spend on game development, they don't have to answer to stockholders and investors. All the money they get goes to them only, so that's a big perk to offset the lower starting capital.

This game is going to be developed by inXile Entertainment founded by Brian Fargo, the man behind "Bard's Tale, Fallout 1 and 2, Stonekeep, Dragon Wars, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and more."

So yea, with a resume like that, I find it hard to resist the urge to pre-order this new game he's proposing to make at this price.

Not funny if you're not familiar with the name "Bang Bus".

Rant 954 / The iPad Is A Terrible Product - It's Not Even Absorbent!

SAT

Not having enough sleep is making me grumpy.

My brother made me go to Starhub to transfer the accounts to my name so that he can change his phone and get the $50 rebate with his old phone before it gets too old.

The plan was to cancel the subscription and go for a M1 mobile plan during the IT fair currently happening this weekend.

I remember it took a few days for the process to complete after going to the shop to change the ownership of my phone number, but my bro told me it was immediately done.

Unconvinced, I call Starhub to check. Apparently it takes 2 days but they could "expedite" it.

So I went to the one at IMM and got a queue ticket at 12pm.

When my turn came, everything went smoothly until the end when he told me it takes 3 working days minimum. 3-5 working days are the norm.

Can't "expedite" it.

Fucking wasted my morning I could have used for more sleep.

Now I'm pissed.

And I can't sleep late tonight because some relatives are coming from Malaysia tomorrow.

Then I've got to go to the office early on Monday for some serious work.

Hmph. No more sleeping late till Monday night.

Counter-intuitively, the importance of military spending is inversely proportional to how well the regional and global economies are doing.

Wow! The last king of Burma was really sad. He's probably one of the few former kings I've read about who died in destitute, and his grandaughter is barely aware of her royal lineage.

The most impressive part of the article was this quote:

My late father, the Royal Mindon Min, the golden-footed lord of the white elephant, master of a thousand gold umbrellas, owner of the Royal peacocks, lord of the sea and of the world, whose face was like the sun, always smoked the Esoof cheroot while meditating on his treatment of the bull-faced, earthswallowing English. Had I done the same I should never have lost my throne, but I used the opium-drugged cheroots from Manila and the trash which was sent to me from San Francisco, and I fell.

He was such a poor king, he didn't even know why. Blaming his drug of choice for his downfall!

I wonder why nobody revolted before the British took him down.

In fact, it feels like the British did the locals a favour by exiling him. On hindsight, an execution would have been preferable because now the Burmese will always have something in their history to be ashamed of.

What luck!

The Malaysian relatives came over in the evening today because they were leaving tomorrow. Apparently the elder son, my uncle, was unable to take leave on Monday so they had to rush everything to the point where they couldn't visit my mum.

So they came over to chat a bit and left.

I was also fortunate enough to ask the right question and he gave me the most helpful answer throughout this whole mess.

It had been in my mind constantly for a week now and I was unable to find an answer, so the first thing I asked when we sat down was," Is it possible to settle all the intestate matters without a lawyer?"

Since he was a banker in his 40s, he probably knew quite a bit about the laws involved.

Moreover, the estate laws in Penang and Singapore can't possibly be too different since they were both British colonies until a couple decades ago, then in the same country for a few years after that.

Unless he was a Muslim, in which case he'd be more familiar with the estate laws of the Syariah Court. He wasn't.

Hence the most useful answer I've ever gotten so far - get a "Letter of Administration" from the "Public Trustee office".

Seriously, googling for "intestate" and "wills" and "no wills" only got me websites that told me how to write a will and how the properties of the deceased are split.

Nothing mentioned those two names he gave me that I quoted.

The catch, when I found the correct websites, was that there were a lot of documents I needed to prepare that I don't understand. Clearly the laws are designed such that lawyers can make money out of the ignorant lay.

Here's what I got from the website of Singapore's Subordinate Court:

Documents required in the application for Grant of Probate and Letters of Administration cases:

  • An Originating Summons together with a statement containing the relevant information to be entered in an electronic template;
  • A checklist for the Originating Summons in an electronic template;
  • A supporting affidavit verifying the information in the Statement for Probate or Administration. The affidavit must be in the format and contain the necessary supporting documents as prescribed by paragraph 118 (6) of the Subordinate Courts Practice Directions and must be filed within 14 days after the filing of the Originating Summons and Statement,
  • The Administration Oath(s) by the Applicant(s) and Co-administrator, if any;
  • A certified true copy of the deceased's death certificate. The Original must be submitted to the Probate Counter, located at the Civil registry of the Subordinate Courts, for verification by 4.30 pm of the next working day after the electronic filing of the Originating Summons and Statement.
  • A certified true copy of Inheritance Certificate from the Syariah Court (for Muslim estates only). The original must be submitted to the Probate Counter for verification by 4.30 pm, of the next working day of the electronic filing of the Originating Summons;
  • A certified true copy of the Will. The original must be submitted to the Probate Counter, located at the Civil registry of the Subordinate Courts, by 4.30 pm of the next working day after the electronic filing of the Originating Summons and Statement;
  • Certificate of Result of Caveat Search together with the search reports from both the High Court and Subordinate Courts in the electronic format.

Right...

In fact the website also advises visitors to get a lawyer to handle all that for them if they're unfamiliar with the necessary procedures.

And that's why every lawyer I've ever encountered advised everyone to make a will. With one, you would get a lawyer since he or she is the one keeping the will, and everything is simpler.

Coz this is the kind of crap your surviving kids (or wife or parents) have to go through after you're gone.

I could also ask the Public Trustee to do this for me but it charges a percentage of whatever estates it handles for me.

As for the lawyers, I have no idea how much they would charge, so I'm going to ask for a quote.

TUE

Sooooooo there are a few types of salted fish.

At least two.

One is soft and the other is hard.

Apparently the soft kind isn't supposed to be fried before making steamed meat cake with it.

No wonder it got burnt so easily.

I bought about 200g of it and used 100g with roughly 500g of pork in each attempt.

The first wasn't so good because it was not easily to prepare.

The stuff was raw, so it was kinda hard to separate the meat from the bones.

But with my cleaver, I managed to debone most of it.

Since it was soft while the skin was tough, it was hard to get a proper hold onto it without squeezing it into mush. Hence I didn't cut it into tiny pieces.

The result was that the flavour didn't spread throughout the meat.

The second time was better because I took the time to cut it into smaller pieces.

Since it's known to be carcinogenic I'm not going to try salted fish for quite some time. The point of this is to find out how cost-effective this dish was. Cost in terms of time, money and effort and effectiveness being the tastiness of the dish.

It's quite cost-effective but the health effect wasn't worth it.

Transexual air stewardesses?

You know who should be the happiest about this?

The rest of the air stewardesses.

Why?

No more sexual harassment!

I want an iPad 3. It's got the best display among all the tablets as far as I can tell, and that's really the only important feature for my work IMO.

I could also just print out photos which is the cheapest alternative but that's far less convenient.

The cheaper alternative is to get either the iPad 2 or the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but their displays still look vastly inferior to that of the unreleased product.

Finished Mass Effect 3 yesterday. Kinda surprised that my reputation didn't allow me to talk my way through the final conversation. Still, I took what I got.

I have no reason to replay the game at the moment because I've finished almost everything the game had to offer without replaying the previous two games. The only sidequests I didn't complete were the ones that I had before the Citadel invasion and the ones that I couldn't find even though I had explored every star system available and got 100% for every one that had anything to be found.

Battles were easy on Normal. Throw plus Singularity/Pull is an awesome combo for any situation. I just take whichever has the fastest recharge speed. My Throw's cooldown was below 2s after half the game because I went for recharge speed bonus most of the time.

Although I used a sniper rifle, I rarely shot anything with my weapon. Therefore after I realized my cooldown bonus is affected by the weight of the weapons I carry, I only went on missions with the rifle.

I think it was possible to complete entire missions without firing a shot but there was no achievement for that so I didn't bother to make life harder than necessary.

The only times I fired the gun was when I was fighting harder battles like multiple brutes and banshees, or when I got impatient.

Oh, and the shield-wielding guardians. Their shields were so annoying! Fortunately I realized I could just push their shield away with a Throw and then snipe their heads off. Quicker.

Brutes and banshees were hard until I took Carnage as my bonus ability. I played as a Sentinel and this class has no strong ability against armour. Warp's good but not good enough. In this game, anti-armour is far more important than anti-shield or -barrier.

Also, Cryo's useless when Throw has such a fantastic cooldown. At max level I could spam Throws faster than enemies could recover... unless there were more than two of them coming for me and my teammates were down.

That never happened.

Both had happened multiple times but never at the simultaneously.

Throw's so overpowered, I didn't even need to hide behind covers in the final mission most of the time, while enemies were being killed despite doing that (Warp behind walls).

The only time when I felt overwhelmed was at the final mission where I had just finished all the brutes and banshees and I realized I only had 4 rounds remaining to fight the large wave of marauders. I could probably finish it but I had had enough of fighting so I just ran for the missile controls.

I even had to use a grenade and a medi-gel in the same fight!

Grenades weren't very useful when I was using the Singularity/Throw combo. Both did the same except grenades were limited in quantity. The benefits of using grenades were that they were more powerful and they didn't have recharge times.

I didn't need the extra damage when my exploding Singularities were flinging enemies out of the map all the time. I'm a pacifist... sometimes.

But I did use it because I had to kill the brutes before they could charge me. I once killed a brute that was charging towards me and got an achievement for that, but there was no need to repeat the feat all the time. No need to tempt fate.

Perhaps ME3 had balance issues. Guns were so unnecessary in the game. I play the game mostly using EDI and Liara because of their abilities.

For the biotic detonation I needed someone with quick recharging biotic abilities, so that gave me either Javik or Liara. But I didn't like how Pull brought the enemies closer to me and only affected a single target, so I chose Liara. Morever, Liara had Warp vs Javik's Dark Channel. Dark Channel was too slow, while the additional Warp could also help me take down enemy shields and barriers quickly.

For the third member, I needed someone to take down enemy shields since my Overload took too long to recharge. So that gave me the options of Tali or EDI. Tali had the better anti-shield/barrier ability obviously, but she had nothing against armour. In addition, drones no longer distract enemies as effectively as they did in the last game, so I took EDI who had Incinerate.

The teammates I picked were all-rounded except for their firepower so that they were almost always useful, with EDI being the least useful due to her slow recharge speeds. Good thing I made guns obsolete by detonating Singularities with Throws.

About the game itself, the level designers were great as usual. Every battle felt interesting, not too hard, and allowed room for creativity. Maybe too easy, but that could have been due to the difficulty setting.

The writers, not so great. I felt that one of the foundations of the plot was weak - the fact that it took so long for them to overwhelm Earth's defenses when it seemed to take mere days for the Reapers to cut through their extraplanetary defenses.

If they never found the Reapers' sole weakness until Shepard discovered it late into the game, if the Reapers could destroy entire fleets with ease, how come it took what felt like weeks for them to completely take over the planet?

Unless the plot was saying that all the things I did took place within a couple of days.

I think that kinda ruined the story for me a little.

Of course setting a minimum wage level in larger countries like Malaysia is not a good idea. RM800 is a totally different amount to a city-dweller compared to a kampong resident.

Even the concept of minimum wage in itself is has debatable consequences.

Don't get me wrong, I pay my workers more than the generally accepted rates, but setting minimum wage is quite obviously a bad idea to me.

Too high, and it just makes it pointless to run small or medium businesses.

Too low, and employers who have been paying their workers higher will have an excuse to stop giving raises until the minimum wage rises... or even give them pay cuts when the business doesn't do too well.

On one hand, minimum wages means employers must pay their workers at least a certain amount of money; on the other, it also means that workers will remain jobless until they find an employer who can afford to pay them that much.

The Small-Medium Industry Association of Malaysia has warned that 80% of small firms will be “totally killed” if the minimum wage is set at RM800. SMEs employ about 59% of the workforce, or about seven million workers, according to the association...That would put four million jobs at risk.

Moreover, as Andrew Lo, a trade unionist from Sarawak, rightly framed it: “If companies cannot afford to pay a minimum wage that is set at around the poverty line, they have no business being in business.”

Because yeah, if 4 million people are jobless, well... too bad.

When you get even an additional 400,000 unemployed people (10% of the estimate) on the streets, blaming their ex-employers for sucking will solve the issue, right?

And the first thing I can think of when this happens is that prices will go up. That's obvious, I know.

This makes local businesses uncompetitive.

What will they do?

If the difference is large enough, they would move their operations to cheaper locations like Indonesia. In fact some of my competitors have already been doing that for years.

The bottomline here is that a low wage is better than no wage.

The fact remains that it is completely unnecessary for my business to stay in Singapore. If it is no longer worth the convenience, it is perfectly ok for business owners to find greener pastures elsewhere.

Here's the truth that people should be aware of: it's not the duty of private businesses to provide jobs, but the government's.

It sucks but it's true.

That's why DBS and POSB offer such crappy rates for everything. Focusing on creating jobs simply lowers the effectiveness of the organization. If the same amount of money can pay two average employees or a single well-trained veteran employee, having to focus on creating jobs means you must choose the former.

And that's why in most countries, the top talents rarely remain in civil service, something our own government is trying to avoid among the top civil servants.

So how does one make sure the rate is correct?

That is so debatable, seriously.

For example, the minimum wage for waiters and porters can be lower because they can also rely on tips to supplement their income. You can't say the same for janitors; nobody leaves a tip when they accidentally clog the toilet bowls.

Yet both are in the service sector.

Moreover, what about the handicapped and unskilled people? Obviously few employers will be willing to pay them what they pay normal workers. Will this lead to a worsening of discrimination against them?

The general idea that setting a minimum wage will force businesses to be more efficient. The problem is there is also the alternative of moving everything elsewhere except for the shops.

Anyway, there's a whole Wiki article on the debate.

Rant 953 / Mailing Coconuts

THU

Looks like I wasn't quick enough. It's Thursday today and my weekend hasn't begun yet. I still have stuff to do tomorrow excluding all the intestate matters.

Speaking of intestate matters, I wonder if it's possible to do everything without a lawyer.

I mean, my working hours are flexible, so I can handle a lot of legwork that is usually involved in settling this issue.

But it's just that I have no idea what I'm missing. I'm now doing all the insurance stuff but there's still the utility bills, banking and housing matters to attend to. What else?

I have yet to think of more.

Another thing is that my father's death certificate is strangely missing.

My bro and I found it on several occasions in the past but today, we simply couldn't find it.

I need it because without a will, my father is technically the next-of-kin. I have to prove that he has passed away to make my bro and I the beneficiaries of anything she owned.

I could also contact the ICA for a certified copy aka a Death Extract but that would take time and money.

FRI

So my weekend begins on Friday evening just like everyone else. I even forgot I have something to do in the office this morning (later) so I played Mass Effect 3 till 3am.

Oops.

I needed the sleep to communicate properly.

What's done is done. Now I shall fill my veins with coffee instead.

Also planning to buy a tablet during the coming IT expo or trading show or whatever it's supposed to be called.

Speaking of expo, I'm seriously considering one alternative I was told about next year.

In large malls there are usually open spaces, sometimes called "atriums", where they occasionally rent out to people to sell stuff in.

It's similar to setting up a pasar malam stall except it's in a better environment.

The location of the mall is not exactly an issue because I'm not going to be there myself all the time.

Depending on various factors, I try it after this year.

Absolutely not going to consider this as a serious income source, just something to complement what I already have.

Rental is mostly not too high per day but I wonder if I can net any profit from this.

My rough estimate is pretty low, although it's still worth the little effort it seems to require.

Rant 952 / Economy Down The Drain? Print Money And Declare Martial Law!

Tropico 3. I've never played the game of brinkmanship so hard in my entire life!

My economy was so bad, yet so awesome. I was making $30k-55k per ship by exporting canned pineapples, fish and coffee, but I was also hitting negative numbers by the time the next ship arrives. I keep increasing my revenues yet I also keep spending more to pacify my people.

And it happened for years until the game crashed without an error message!

During the first several years when my debts spiralled out of control, I used all sorts of edicts to gain popularity while refusing to hold elections. This resulted in citizens joining the rebels and foreign rebels infiltrating my island.

That was when I had over 40 unemployed citizens out of about 400.

When I couldn't stop my treasury from emptying itself before the next ship's arrival, I printed money (causes all prices for everything I do to rise by 30%), built a few more banks (I had college graduates aplenty)... and it still kept going near 0.

Unable to get my unemployment rate down, I got really worried about rebels, especially since they had been importing foreign rebels for a few years by then.

So I did the unthinkable - kill DJ Juanito.

Poor guy. I liked him, really!

But the effects of silencing him permanently include an absence of rebellions for 3 years and... the departure of Betty Boom the other radio broadcaster(hurray!).

A necessary sacrifice.

RIP, brah!

During this period of time I printed money once more but my banks managed to keep my building costs low (each reduces building costs by up to 20% depending on the skill of the bankers). For the next 5-6 years I used the money for more homes, more healthcare and another factory, totalling three.

In addition I added guard bases till I had 4-5 of them so that when the rebels finally attacked, I had about 27 soldiers versus 8-11 of them.

With the spec ops training I was giving them, my army was winning every battle.

However, I was still concerned with a possible increase in the number of rebels if I continued to ignore the people's concerns that consisted mainly of "lack of housing" and "insufficient healthcare". So I gave them more homes with what little money I got.

That kept the rebels from growing beyond 12 members.

Finally it came to a point where removing every money-consuming edict (eg sensitivity training and social security) still couldn't save my economy, and I was $20k negative when the ships leave.

That wasn't the end. I was absolutely nowhere close to quitting.

Nope!

I could still print money (each time I get $20k and another 30% permanent cost increase, up to 5 times per game) to build a few more coffee farms and a factory then stop spending completely for a few years!

THOSE COULD HAVE SAVED THE ISLAND! I AM STILL SURE THEY COULD!

Then the game crashed.

Stunned, I seriously just stared at the screen for like five seconds without moving.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!

I COULD HAVE REVIVED MY ECONOMY!

There is the autosave feature but it only does it every few years or something.

So they only opened the boxes of sweaters today. It's amazing the sorts of problems the factories can give me. We've only opened a few boxes today and I'm already discovering all kinds of surprises inside.

I'm not actually pissed, just slightly annoyed and amused at the same time. This will kill my estimated profit but it's interesting to see the kind of crap they dare to throw at me.

Rant 951 / Chapter One

Ever notice how shitty games suddenly become so interesting in your portable devices when you're in the bus/train?

I once read that the human mind has never adapted to idle waiting. Here's the evidence.

Humans aren't meant to sit around and do nothing.

I've just discovered the website of Skidrow, one of the biggest "scene groups" of PC game cracking.

I've struck gold!

It's not piracy if you aren't downloading anything   >:3

These scene groups do not make money off their work. Anyone who does is looked down upon, eg Kim Dotcom whom Razor1911 had openly dissed on their website.

2012-01-25 19:11:00
Never make a profit on software piracy, a rule older than the internet. Let's hope that the pedophile Kim Schmitz will get sentenced to an eternity in the federal pound him in the ass prison.

For them, it's not about the money. Neither should anyone spend money on pirated softwares.

Can't sleep. 5 things I need to do within the week. Get a haircut, settle insurance policies, settle minor issues in office, call factories, talk to buyers.

Maaaaaan...

Yea they're actually very simple tasks. I just can't sleep at night and I don't feel like doing anything during the day.

A sign of depression!

Hmm... I need to get out and do stuff.

Mass Effect 3 is coming out. Good weekend ahead.

And weekend starts on Thursday if I'm quick enough.

Went through my collection of videos I'd taken during the last few years, beginning with the ones I took with the shitty Sony Ericsson walkman phone till the ones I took with my current Nokia N8.

Basically searched through them for anything with her in it. Found a few but not the one I had in mind when I began.

Copied the ones I found into a separate folder and also into my bro's portable hard drive.

Tropico 3 is easy if not for the random events.

I mastered Sandbox mode on Easy maps with random events set to "Rare" that resulted in 98% difficulty, so I thought I could handle a bit more.

Tried Moderate maps twice with random events set to "Normal" that resulted in 103% difficulty.

Lost both times.

It's just 5% more!

Clearly the real difference is the random events. In my case, I keep getting pwned by coup d'etats because I can't get enough soldiers.

At first I couldn't get enough generals because I somehow couldn't get enough college graduates. Without generals I can't hire more soldiers.

When I solved that by taking the training bonuses for my dictator's traits, I don't have enough money to build more guard stations to get more soldiers.

I think I need to be really generous with the construction offices. Money has been no issue, but clearly I need 4-5 of them as soon as I can because their building speed is so slow!

I could also just please my citizens but that would be missing the point of being a dictator.

Workers on strike on MY island? Shoot 3 of them!

Rival candidate during an election has more votes than me? Assassinate him!

If you want happy citizens you should just play Anno 2070 or Sim City.
